Those who live on roads such as Marine Parade, Brighton, will be delighted to learn Sita is thinking of returning to roadsweepers with carts (Argus, April 6).

At the moment, Sita insists on waking up a good proportion of the residents of Brighton in the early hours by driving its high-decibel, state-of-the-art cleaning vehicles up and down under our windows.

These devices make a noise like a jet aircraft preparing for take-off. Marine Parade at 3am most nights resembles acoustically a busy runway at Gatwick rather than a seaside promenade.

Sometimes one of these vehicles will go up and down, round and round, chasing some errant scrap of litter.

Sometimes the operators will stop for five minutes to have a chat, leaving the vehicle roaring directly below one's window.

Then, just when you think the thing has finally gone and you can return to sleep, you hear it returning down the other side of the road.

Or else another comes along, sweeping the footway instead of the road, or Madeira Drive instead of Marine Parade.

I don't believe sweepers with carts could be any less efficient than these ungainly monsters. They certainly may allow some of us to get some sleep
