Skipper Mike Imrie admits his Worthing side face a race against time to be ready for the Sussex Trophy final against Haywards Heath.

The two sides will meet on Sunday, May 13, after Worthing beat Eastbourne 29-10 at Roundstone Lane on Sunday.

Heath edged through 41-30 away to Bognor and face a series of tough league games before final day.

Worthing have no league fixtures left and Imrie admitted: "We have got a month to pick up our skills level and do a lot of fitness training.

"We went totally off the boil after the first half hour. Heath will not let us off that lightly."

John Quirk, brought into the centre for his physical presence, scored the first try and played a huge role in the second for Ben Coulson as Worthing took charge in the first half hour.

Coulson's conversion and two well struck penalties made it 18-0 before Worthing props Sean Bennett and Danny Piggott and Eastbourne flanker Gavin Partridge were sin-binned.

Eastbourne finished the first half strongly and, when Jon Lord converted a penalty try given for persistent infringement, an excellent second period looked to be in prospect.

It did not turn out like that. Eastbourne, for all the promptings of centre Jamie Bremer, never threatened to get back into the game and managed just a Lord penalty, with Coulson twice on target for the hosts.

A moment of real quality finally arrived in stoppage time with Imrie and Coulson crafting an excellent score down the blindside for young wing Tony Cruz.

Eastbourne coach Andre Groenen said: "We didn't really click. We are disappointed because we thought we could have got a result."

Haywards Heath's Trophy triumph came hot on the heels of a London Two South 48-8 win over Old Midwhitgiftians on Saturday at Horsham.

There was a spring in Heath's step on Saturday with Andy Cook going over within a minute after a sweeping backs move, and Alex Meredith extending the lead before Owen Ashton kicked another three points. Mark Pymm rounded off the first half with a try which Ashton converted for a 20-8 lead.

Further tries were scored by Dave Cook, Ashton, Dave Virgin and Pymm.

Giles Goodburn was an early casualty against Bognor as he pulled up injured with the line in sight.

Tries by Andy Cook, Nick Killick and Dave Wattam, all converted by Ashton, put Heath in command but Bognor replied before Meredith further extended Heath's lead with Ashton converting.

Bognor produced an excellent second half performance. Flanker Johnny Lang scored a hat-trick and fly-half Stuart Pearce and full back Darren Brown also went over. Pearce kicked a conversion and penalty.

Heath added two Ashton penalties and a Justin Graham try but captain Wattam was left singing his opponents' praises.

He said: "We achieved two victories at the weekend which was our aim but Bognor played very well in the second half."
