Saltdean rider John Limpus finished fourth in the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 42km hilly time trial and led his GS Stella club to another team win.

Stella are proving to be one of the south's top clubs. In the first two months of the road season they have already notched up eight team and individual wins.

The fastest rider was Hampshire star Malcolm Cox (St Raphael) who recorded 58min.56sec. Limpus clocked 1hr.0min.23sec, while clubmate Mark Jones (Storrington) was just seven seconds slower in fifth place.

Portslade's Andy Payne recorded 1hr.4min.5sec to complete their winning team.

Lewes Wanderers had a good entry for their ten-and-a-half mile club time trial over a return course from Newhaven to Beddingham.

Chris Martin, 42, was the fastest rider in 24min.43sec, followed by Darren Riding with 25min.0sec. Pre-race favourite Mark Winton was third in 25min.19sec.

Some male competitors were shocked when Janet Homewood started her season with an impressive time of 30min.58sec.

Much of the national cycling programme is being badly effected by the foot-and-mouth crisis. So far all road events in Sussex have gone ahead, although off-road events have been cancelled.

Clubs in other areas are complaining that the agriculture ministry is giving conflicting advice. One Hampshire club was told to cancel its road race, although a supermarket next to the race HQ was allowed to remain open with hundreds of cars coming and going all day. Similar stories are being repeated across the country.

The East Sussex CA's two-up time trial on Sunday is on main roads and is expected to go ahead. The start is from Laughton (9am) and the question is who will be able top stop John Limpus and Mark Jones?

Steve Dennis and Andy Seltzer (East Grinstead) and Richard Sutton and Simon McNamara (Etoile) are among those who will try.
