Horsham suffered a heartbreaking golden goal defeat against holders Brighton in the Sussex Cup semi-finals at Portslade on Sunday.

Horsham, who have never reached the final, were denied when Barney Stubbs slotted home an equaliser in the dying seconds.

Steve Edmonds then scored Brighton's golden goal in extra time, this after Keith Anderson had put Horsham in front after ten minutes.

Horsham captain Neil Burlinson said: "It was a devastating way to lose. Afterwards everyone just sat around in silence. Today I am going to drop a line to all my players and say well played."

Brighton skipper Carlo Missirian said: "My whole team said Horsham were outstanding. It was the best defensive display I have seen from a side this season.

"Horsham were literally ten seconds away from victory. From our point of view, it was a monumental team performance to keep going."

Brighton, the cup holders, now meet last season's opponents Chichester, of the Southern Premier, in the final on April 29 at Bognor Arena after they defeated Crawley 5-2.

Crawley made Chi work hard for their triumph but an Adam Beer double in the first half put them ahead and further strikes by BJ Ranger (2) and Clive Dunn sealed victory.

Chichester coach Andy Barnes said: "It's a huge revenge match. Hopefully we can put on a better performance than last year when we were beaten by the better team."

EAST Grinstead, already relegated from National League division one, surprised Hampstead and Westminster with some great attacking hockey on their way to 4-2 victory at Saint Hill.

Dominick Male scored a hat-trick and there was one for Ian Pattison.

Lewes missed out on the play-offs with a 1-0 defeat at Beeston, who needed a victory to keep out of the relegation shake-up. Chelmsford's 4-3 win at Barford meant that Lewes would have missed out even if they had won.

A Jamie McBlane goal on 45 minutes decided the match although Lewes keeper Chris Hibbert made a string of impressive saves as he took the man-of-the-match award.

Manager Peter Boyse said: "Overall it has been a good season with a fourth place finish in the table but it is still a little disappointing we could not go that one step further."

Newhaven finished their Kent/Sussex division one season with a 3-1 home reverse against Sevenoaks. Dan Temple scored for Newhaven.
