A woman was killed and a second seriously injured in a crash on a dual carriageway.

Motorists helped pull the two victims from the wreckage as smoke and flames started to come from one of the cars involved. The crash happened on the A24 in West Grinstead just after 3pm on Friday.

Fire crews from Horsham and nearby Partridge Green put out the flames as ambulance paramedics arrived.

Police closed both carriageways of the road while emergency services dealt with the incident and cleared wreckage from the scene.

Both women, who have not been named by Sussex Police, who operate data protection guidelines, were taken to Worthing Hospital.

One is believed to have died at the scene while the other was last night being treated for serious injuries.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Two vehicles were involved in the crash on the A24 close to the junction with the B2135 Partridge Green road.

"I can confirm that one female victim received fatal injuries and the other was seriously injured."
