I see the Radio One Dance Party may not come to Brighton this summer (Argus, March 15) after the fiasco of broken glass on the beach last year.

I used to include the Radio One Roadshow in our summer activity programme for our foreign students during the Eighties and Nineties. It was extremely popular, although there was a gap of several years when the BBC stayed away. The BBC said Brighton was the only resort to ask for payment - other resorts were only too pleased to get the free publicity.

The traditional home of the roadshow was indeed Madeira Drive, although the Level was used successfully in the Nineties.

To my knowledge, there was never a problem with broken glass, probably because the roadshow ran from 11am to 1pm and catered primarily for teenagers. If it is has metamorphosed into a night-time event, I think Brighton may have to wave goodbye to it, because even if it is held on Madeira Drive there will always be irresponsible people who take bottles on to the beach.

With the best will in the world, no one would be able to clean the beach safely ready for use the next day. There could be a similar problem if it were held on grass, as at the last two New Year parties in the Steine.
