In a thrilling final, he stopped Ritchie Venner's attempt to win for a ninth time 21-18, 11-21, 21-19.

Nigel Eckersley has won the Western Open Grand Prix title at Bath. It was his second Grand Prix victory of the campaign and he retains his place on the new England veterans' list at No.2.

Eckersley, from Uckfield, produced a skilful blend of attack and defence and comfortably defeated Gary Morgan (Hertfordshire) 11-0, 11-9, 11-3.

Sussex champion Rose Rainton suffered a shock defeat at Bath in the women's singles groups when she lost to Japanese player Chihiro Mano, who is an undergraduate at Manchester University.

But with Sheila King, Rainton reached the semi-finals of the women's doubles before losing to eventual winners Nicola Deaton and Kubrat Owolabi.

Horsham's No.4 player Dominic Hall, 16, has risen to No.4 on the England junior list. He was chosen to play for the England senior squad for the first time at the recent English Open at Chatham and on Sunday reached the final of the Derby 4-Star junior select tournament where he was beaten 21-12, 21-10 by Dale Barham (Cambridgeshire).

The Hollingbury club host a special day (10am-4pm) highlighting Disability Awareness on March 17.

It will be a training day to show how disabled people can still play table tennis.There will be workshops and practical play aimed at building confidence to work and play with disabled people.
