Saltdean's John Limpus raced to his second win of the season in the East Sussex CA's hardriders' time-trial, held over a tough 16-mile course at Bodle Street Green.

Limpus (GS Stella) recorded 39min.45sec, an excellent time in view of the damp and cold conditions.

He said: "That was pretty cold, but I'm going to Canada for two weeks to do some snowboarding. I'll be back in time for the Southern Counties 25-mile time trial."

James Dear (Eastbourne Rovers) finished second in 40min.33sec, Paul James, of Crawley Wheelers, was third 41min.15sec and Brighton Mitre's Tristan Court (41min.41sec) and Tim Holmes (42min.57sec) finished fourth and fifth. Richard Sutton (VC Etoile) was sixth in 43min.0sec.

The Mitre won the team event with their third man, Jay Chisnall, recording 44min.5sec for eighth. He was also the fastest veteran.

There was a great battle for honours in the East Surrey Hardriders time trial over a 32-mile course. Among the 130 riders were last year's winner Michael Hutchinson (Team MDT), 1999 winner Richard Prebble (Team Clean) and Sussex ace Sean Yates (Team Clean) from Buxted, the 1997 winner and holder of the course record of 1hr.0min.58sec.

Hutchinson, the British Best All-Rounder, blasted round the course in 1hr.10min.2sec. Prebble finished second in 1hr.10min.51sec and Yates placed third in 1hr.11min.44sec. Steve Dennis (East Grinstead) finished sixth with 1hr.15min.58sec.

Sussex provided the winner of the women's event, with Marina Bloom (Crawley Wheelers) recording 1hr.33min.50sec. Angela Nainby (East Grinstead) was second in 1hr.35min.18sec, Mark Jones (GS Stella) clocked 1hr.16min.32sec for second place in the veterans' race.

The Sussex CA promote two time trials this weekend, a 16-and-a-half mile event at Ashurst on Saturday (2pm) and a 25 mile event at Horsham on Sunday (7.30am). Mark Jones, Paul James and Peter Tadross (Hastings) are among the entries.
