I am sure Mrs Power will be pleased to learn Brighton and Hove City Council will continue to subsidise her daughter's transport to Cardinal Newman School (Opinion, February 26).

I for one very much hope my own education authority, East Sussex, will decide to end this unfair privilege for religious choice.

Like Mrs Power, I want the best for my children and have chosen to send them to schools which best meet their needs and where they will be happy. These happen to be some distance from home.

They don't get subsidised transport and nor would I expect them to. But if my children's schools had been chosen on the basis of my religion, rather than their academic and social needs, which are surely more important to a child's well being, then they would be subsidised by other local taxpayers.

It's time to end this anomaly. Well done East Sussex for considering it.
