Even in Brighton and Hove, gay parents get some funny comments from people who do not understand or approve of what they have done.
That's why a support group called Rainbow Families has been formed for gay mothers and fathers in the city.
It used to be called Pink Parents but changed the name to indicate its purpose is more social than political.
Most people are not prejudiced against gay parents who can be just as good or bad as any other parents but there's often a lot of explaining to do.
One myth that needs dispelling is that the gay scene is focussed on nightlife.
It's not for these parents, who have to keep the same hours as any other mum and dad.
