Drivers swerved to avoid hitting a man who wandered on to the Brighton bypass early today.
Police received several calls from motorists as the man strolled into the centre of the westbound A27 at Hollingbury.
He had several near misses with vehicles until police took him into protective custody.
The 25-year-old man was detained at the John Street police station where he was being seen by doctors today.
In a separate incident early today, police talked down a man who was found standing on the edge of the roof of the main entrance at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Eastern Road, Brighton.
He too was taken into custody to be assessed by doctors.
