Company directors have urged the Government not to introduce a new employment tax credit because of the "unacceptable" extra burden it would place on business.
The Institute of Directors said the new credit, set to be introduced in 2003, would create "considerable" extra work for employers.
Deputy head of policy Richard Baron said: "Thousands of employers who currently do not have to worry about delivering tax credits would suddenly be caught in the net."
