Amid all the welcome civic rejoicing over the bestowal of city status one encounters an occasional gripe: That all the effort from all those enthusiasts, including the Argus itself, and all that expense was really unnecessary; and that they need not have bothered as the decision was a "political fix" from the start.

I don't know how many churlish bigots there are claiming this but I do hope they are few in number.
