Thousands of rail engineers were today starting Railtrack's biggest-ever Christmas engineering programme as the great festive getaway drew to a low-key close.
About 8,000 railway engineers are working round the clock at 60 sites nationwide until early on December 27.
They aim to remove or ease about 100 of the 463 speed restrictions still in place following the Hatfield disaster.
The roads were unusually quiet for Christmas Eve, mainly due to the long run-up to a Monday Christmas.
AA Roadwatch's Emma Smith said there had been a few weather-related problems in Sussex due to floods but otherwise things had run smoothly.
Many travellers put their trust in coaches for their Christmas travel, with National Express reporting an increase of 15-20 per cent in passenger numbers compared with last year.
