The tone of the letter from councillors Mike Willson and Dave Munnery regarding the Shoreham port regeneration scheme was offensive (November 23).
Why should we accept a proposal that gives both Shoreham and Hove attractive housing, leisure and business amenities but gives Southwick all the industry and in the process reduces the size of Southwick's beach by two-thirds?
The Halcrow designs for the beach show a small enclosed area surrounded by concrete.
It will be impossible to see in either direction along the coast and unsuitable for surfers. The reduction in size may well mean Adur District Council will ban dogs from May to September and in summer it will be overcrowded.
The promise of beach huts, kiosks and outdoor chess hardly compensates for the loss of nearly a mile of beach.
Furthermore, disabled and pushchair access could be provided at a minute fraction of the Halcrow scheme and does not require concreting over the beach. I'm sure there are many disabled people and families with pushchairs horrified to find themselves the justification for such a proposal.
Is there not a grim irony in using a brownfield site in a densely populated and highly developed area and then building on one of its few remaining areas of open, undeveloped space as well?
