A man's body was found washed up on Brighton beach this morning.

Police do not yet know who he was or the cause of his death. A post-mortem examination will be held.

Acting Detective Inspector Paul Fullwood, leading the inquiry, said: "At the moment we are keeping an open mind."

The dead man was found at about 7.30am, just west of the West Pier. He was 35 to 45 with long brown hair and a beard.

He wore jeans and brown shoes but was bare-chested. Clothes found on the beach nearby were being checked to see if they were his.

Police appealed for witnesses who saw a man on the beach near the pier last night or early today to come forward.
