Readers of Adam Trimingham's excellent article marking the centenary of Oscar Wilde's death (November 30) will be pleased to know his spirit is alive and well in Brighton.

That very night, six members of the Just Wild About Oscar club assembled in a private room to commemorate the occasion. Each wore the Full Oscar: Knee breeches, coloured waistcoat, green buttonhole, gold-tipped cane.

For over six hours we took turns to declaim choice extracts from his works, including half of The Importance Of Being Earnest, the whole of The Ballad Of Reading Gaol and much of De Profundis. Not a word was spoken that was not Wilde's.

The end came at about 2.30am with the immortal last utterance: "Either that wallpaper goes or I do."

Refreshment was taken on an appropriately Wildean scale throughout and some members were so overcome with emotion they had to be carried home.
