Angry train commuters have been left hopping mad after station toilets were closed for repainting.

On top of all the problems rail passengers have faced over recent weeks, people wanting to spend a penny at Brighton Station have now found the shutters pulled down on the gents' toilet.

There was no explanation as to why they were closed, but a sign directed customers to the disabled toilet near the taxi rank. Unfortunately, the disabled toilet was also locked, sparking anger among those queuing.

Paddy Emery, 29, from Croydon, said: "Travelling by train is a nightmare at the moment and when you finally arrive the station toilet is shut. It's ridiculous."

A Connex spokeswoman said the facilities had been abused by rough sleepers, drug addicts and vandals.

They had been closed for three days for repainting, but would reopen on Saturday.

She expressed surprise to hear the disabled toilet was also locked and said she would take the matter up with the station manager.

Plans to build new toilets at the station, on the site of the British Transport Police office, have been shelved after Connex lost its franchise to rival firm Govia.

Meanwhile, Fred Simmonds, landlord of the Queen's Head pub opposite the station, has put up a sign stating: "This is a public house, not a toilet. Toilets are for customers' use only."
