Death was an ever-present spectre a hundred years ago even for people apparently in the prime of life.

Thanks to modern medicine, it's now rare for anyone in their teens and twenties to die from natural causes.

Even deaths during childbirth or complications afterwards, which were big causes of death among young women in Victorian and Edwardian times, have almost been eliminated.

That's why the sudden death of 18-year-old Kerry Docherty has been so shocking to her family and her partner, Carl Brown.

Her daughter Megan was born earlier this month without problems. But out with friends just weeks later Kerry collapsed and died, apparently from a chest infection.

Carl and loving relatives are taking care of baby Megan. Friends have started a fund to help provide finance for her as she grows older.

Nobody will ever replace Kerry for Carl, and Megan will never know her mother following this tragedy.

But mementoes of Kerry have been kept to give to Megan when she grows older. Her father, friends and relatives will ensure she's cared for as well as anyone could be.
