Traders in a busy shopping street will switch on their Christmas lights tonight.
More than £3,000 has been spent on illuminations in George Street, Hove, and next year businesses plan to spend more.
Shop owners say it is time to put the controversy of pedestrianisation behind them and look to the future.
They will start in style tonight when Dorothy and Toto from the Wizard of Oz switch the lights on at 4pm.
The two characters will be taking a break from rehearsals of the Christmas musical at the Gardner Arts Centre.
Keith Bryden, of Hove Business Association, said: "The traders and the council have paid for the lights.
"But we would like to spend a great deal more on them next year.
"We hope to extend them out of George Street at both ends into Church Road and Blatchington Road."
