A woman threw hundreds of pounds into the air before plunging from a notorious suicide spot.

The unnamed woman is the second person to have thrown herself off Beachy Head in Eastbourne within three weeks.

Two members of Eastbourne Coastguard spotted the woman, who was in her 30s, standing precariously close to the edge on Saturday afternoon.

She threw what is believed to have been up to £300 in notes in to the air before going over the edge of the cliff.

The part where she plunged has been cordoned off because it has become so popular with suicidal people.

An Eastbourne Coastguard spokesman said: "This prompted a response by the entire cliff rescue team to ascertain where the woman had gone and a search followed.

"The body of the woman was soon discovered. An assessment of the situation was made and it was decided that because of extreme weather and tidal conditions it would be unsafe to effect a recovery at that time.

"It was then decided that the recovery would take place the following morning by the cliff team, who walked around the falling sands where she was taken aboard by the inshore lifeboat crew and brought ashore to be received by paramedics."

Police were today trying to trace the woman's relatives, but insisted they were not treating her death as suspicious.

A woman's body was recovered from the foot of the 400ft cliffs on November 5.
