More than 100 jobs will be created if members of Brighton and Hove planning committee tonight approve a new scheme at the Marina.

A leisure company called Neilson which books and charters marine holidays wants to move into part of a new office building planned there.

But neighbours are objecting, both to the loss of a boat shed and the fear of noise and disturbance.

The objections of residents are easy to counteract. Other possible uses of that site, including flats, would be more likely to cause problems.

While objections from boat users are more serious, it should be possible to tie in conditions stipulating that whatever is in the boat shed now should be replaced and if possible extended elsewhere in the harbour.

If this application is not approved, the firm will go elsewhere. It already had offices available at much cheaper cost at Gatwick Airport. If Neilson establishes itself at the Marina successfully, it's likely to attract other similar businesses to the same area.

Although the Marina has been a success during the last decade, more solid jobs would be welcome there. It also happens to be an an area of high unemployment and poverty.

Planners should not harbour too many doubts about the benefits this scheme can bring to Brighton.
