Bognor Rugby Club are surprising even themselves as they chase a second successive title.

The Sussex One champions saw off rivals Eastbourne 30-0 in London Four South East on Saturday to keep the heat on leaders Dartfordians.

They have not even allowed their opponents a kick at goal in their last two games, let alone a point.

Skipper Tom Spurle enjoyed a rain-lashed encounter at Hampshire Avenue and admitted: "We were only aiming for top five or six at the start of the season.

"There's no reason now why we cannot win the league, although I'm not sure how we could cope with a second promotion."

Tries from Graham Bryce and Karl Flynn, plus a conversion and two penalties by Andy Shipp, gave Bognor a half-time lead of 18-0 having played with the elements.

Karl Rock grabbed a killer score after the re-start and Shipp rounded things off with a try which he converted himself.

Eastbourne's Graham Shiret admitted his side needed to develop a wet weather gameplan. He added: "Bognor are the best side we have played in the league this season."

Hove put up an improved display in losing 17-11 at Beccehamian. The pack was back to strength and lock Michael Walton scored their try, with Phil Ward adding two penalties.

Heathfield went down 27-0 at Old Dunstonians, although they had plenty of chances to score.

The visitors were missing skipper Rick Ure, as well as their first choice front row.

Chichester were a third Sussex side to draw a blank in this section, losing 32-0 at Dartfordians.

There are new leaders in the race for regional league rugby after Uckfield won 40-0 at derby rivals Newick to go top of Sussex One.The scoreline was tough on the lowly hosts, with Uckfield's clinical finishing proving decisive.

Tim Rowland (2), Leigh Bialik, Pete Wickham, Jim Billings and Nick Ridley scored tries after some lovely moves in the horrendous conditions. Bialik added five conversions.

Crowborough enjoyed an outstanding 37-5 win over previous leaders Horsham with tries coming from Steve McCabe, Matthew Usher, Mark Gibbs, Ian Russell, Kit Newman and Ian Gilbert.

Bruce Brooker added a penalty and two conversions, while Fraser Tussler replied for Horsham.

Hastings & Bexhill stand second after tries from Andy Hitch (2), Peter Mahoney, Dave Sprinks and Paul Sandeman helped clinch a 27-7 home verdict over Hellingly.

Hooker Stuart Huntley scored two tries on his league debut for Seaford as they eased past Pulborough 30-6. Neil Furminger and skipper Andy Booth also got over and there were two conversions and two penalties for Simon Baker.

Nick Garrish gave Royal & Sun Alliance the lead at UC Chichester but Dan Surtees's try, plus Ben Dudley's conversion and three penalties, gave the students a 16-5 win. The result also counts for the first round of the Sussex Intermediate Cup.

Wingspan scored at either end of the game to defeat Norfolk Arms 10-0 in Sussex Two West. Justin Cashman made the breakthrough after chasing a kick and skipper Tony Burn crashed through in typical style for the late clincher.

Barns Green were 20-5 victors at home to Midhurst.

Wingers Dave Pannell (3) and Tim Curren (2) shared five tries as Ditchling beat Robertsbridge 55-0 in Sussex Two East. There were also scores for Mark Pratt (2), Mark Cunliffe-Lister and Justin Wallden, with the latter adding five conversions. Skipper Tom Clark said: "We dealt well with the conditions."

Dave Ramus's second-half try clinched Rye's 8-0 win at Burgess Hill after Scott Ashby had edged them ahead with a penalty.

St Francis went down 15-3 at home to Old Haileyburyians in their delayed Tetley's Bitter Vase third round tie. Keith Bowden kicked a penalty.
