Armed police were called in after a man threatened to shoot himself.
He telephoned police last night from an address in Mayflower Square, near Brighton station.
Officers, some of them armed, sealed off the area and police continued speaking to the man by telephone.
They eventually persuaded him to throw the gun outside and give himself up.
The man was taken to hospital under police guard. No one was hurt.
