As a member or regular supporter of no political party, may I express my deepest reservations about Ivor Caplin MP's call for pro-hunt demonstrators to stay away from the Labour Party conference in September (Argus, August 18).

How dare he! Has he no perception of the social and economic upheavals that brought his party into being?

I hold no particular brief for the hunting fraternity but I would defend to the death (as Voltaire said) their right to voice their opinions.

Shame on you, Mr Caplin. Have the courage to take on your detractors face to face.
