Is it really necessary to pillory the local farmer who is claiming compensation for damage caused to his property in the extensive police search for poor Sarah Payne?

Tragic though this heartless murder is, is it really necessary to witch-hunt this man and his family this way? If the editor of the Argus had his house pulled apart for similar reasons, would we expect him to personally bear the costs and I wonder would the reporting have been similar?

In a civilised society, we should all be prepared to share the financial burden of such operations through the appropriate distribution of collected taxes.
