Firefighter and an ambulance crew came to the rescue when they saw a man run across the road in front of them and jump into the sea.

The ambulance crew were driving down Carlisle Parade in Hastings towards the end of their shift when they saw the man jump off the seafront yesterday evening.

Ambulancemen flagged down a passing fire appliance before wading into the water and dragging the man out. He was taken to Conquest Hospital for a check-up but was not injured.

A spokeswoman for Sussex ambulance said: "They didn't have to go swimming after him but they certainly got their feet wet. It was just fortunate they were passing by as were the fire crew. If they hadn't been there goodness knows what might have happened."
