Storrington's Mark Jones (GS Stella) triumphed in the Sussex CA l6.5-mile event at Ashurst in 35m.50sec.

Steve Dennis (East Grinstead) was second (36min.5sec) and Arctic 2000's Tim Bayley third (36min.20sec). Steve Elms was fourth (36min.26sec), to lead new Uckfield-based club In Gear to their first team win.

The 92-mile Oleum-Starlight Grand Prix, held over nine laps of the Goodwood Estate, was won by Cleveland's Chris Newton (Middridge CRT). It was the first Premier Calender race of the season and Newton, who won the title in 1998 thrilled the crowd at the finish in Claypit Lane, Westhampnett.

He outsprinted national road race champion Jon Tanner (Planet X) and Ben Brooks (Linda McCartney Foods). Newton was picking up where he left off last season when he won the National 25-mile Championship and the Isle of Man International Time Trial.

The first three were just ahead of the other four members of the leading group which were one minute clear of the rest.

The Sussex CA's 24-mile Time Trial at Steyning, reduced by a mile due to roadworks, saw a clear-cut win for South Londoner Ron Keeble (34th Nomads).

Keeble recorded exactly 56 minutes to beat Crawley's Paul James by lmin.40sec. Third place went to Dave Dent (Portsmouth), who clocked 57min.46sec.

VC Etoile's new recruit Mike Kingsbury, from East Preston, finished fourth in 58min.8sec, one second ahead of Brighton Mitre's Tristan Court. Saltdean's John Limpus (GS Stella) was sixth (58min.25sec).

VC Etoile's Richard Sutton (Keymer) finished second fastest in the Hainault 50km Time Trial in Essex with lhr.l5min.6sec. The event, won by Martin Meades (RP Resprays) in lhr.14min.3sec, was the first in the South-East hilly courses competition.

Worthing's Steve Geran (2XS) finished fourth in the 52km main event at the Eastway Circuit in East London. Geran was among a small group which lapped the rest of the field.
