A HORSHAM teenager has died from meningitis after falling ill at university.

Student Andrew Sillett, 19, from Erica Way, died on Tuesday only two days after feeling unwell at the weekend.

His parents Chris and Yvonne are still too shocked today to talk about the tragedy.

Andrew fell ill at his room in the annexe to the halls of residence at Sheffield University.

He was first taken to the city's Northern General Hospital, before being moved to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, which has special facilities for meningitis cases.

Andrew, who has two brothers, was in the first year of an environmental studies course at the University, after leaving Collyer's Sixth Form College college last July.

University spokesman Roger Allum said that Andrew had become unconscious on Monday.

He said: "Sadly he never recovered consciousness and on Tuesday afternoon his parents took the decision to switch off the life support machine."

Fellow students and a tutor were aware Andrew was ill. A tutor took him to a GP but the illness was not at first diagnosed. When Andrew still felt ill he was taken by ambulance to hospital.
