JASON LEWRY had his thunder stolen by a man the selectors overlooked at Hove yesterday.

There was no place in any of the winter tour parties for Matthew Maynard and he took out his disappointment on the Sussex attack.

The only surprise was that Maynard, one of the cleanest strikers of the ball in county cricket, didn't go on to make the century he deserved.

He had hammered 94 off 109 balls when Robin Martin-Jenkins, who had come in for some particularly savage treatment from the Glamorgan captain, got his revenge.

Maynard pushed a ball from Mark Robinson backward of square but, turning for a second, he was beaten by Martin-Jenkins' direct hit.

It's a shame the entertainment had to stop because, in full flow, the swashbuckling Maynard was a treat to watch, collecting 16 boundaries with a superb array of attacking strokes and pulling Martin-Jenkins onto the top deck of the pavilion for six.

He added 104 in 24 overs with Tony Cottey who contributed 27, but Cottey did his best to assume Maynard's attacking mantle once the fourth wicket partnership had been broken.

At 5ft 4in he cuts a diminutive figure, but the Sussex bowlers never quite grasped that bowling short to him is a futile exercise.

His off side play was particularly strong but, with a century in sight, he was eighth out, slicing Martin-Jenkins to third man having hit 16 boundaries. Lewry, occasionally operating of a shortened run-up because of persistent ankle trouble, enjoyed his first success with the fifth ball of his second spell when he had Adrian Dale feeling for one outside off stump to be taken by wicketkeeper Nick Wilton.

Wilton owed him one after dropping Wayne Law off the left-armer in the ninth over when he edged the ball down the leg side. The makeshift opener went on to make an entertaining 45 before Sussex hit back with two wickets in three balls after lunch.

Law drove loosely at Mark Robinson and was taken at second slip then Alun Evans fell leg before to Martin-Jenkins playing down the wrong line.

After tea, Lewry returned to claim his 62nd wicket of the season when Michael Powell was caught at mid-on after he mis-timed a pull, and the persevering Robinson removed Robert Croft and Darren Thomas with successive balls but Glamorgan rattled along at nearly five an over and had overtaken Sussex by the 78th over.

With wicketkeeper Adrian Shaw unable to bat after breaking a finger, Maynard declared with a lead of 21 after securing a fourth bonus point, but Sussex were unable to start their second innings because of bad light.
