Mike Coyle cycled 50 miles unpaced in 1hr.51min.37sec to win the East Sussex title at Maresfield.

Coyle (VC Etoile), winner of the Sussex 50-mile Championship the previous week, was well clear of clubmate Tim Mardall who finished second (1hr.53min.1sec).

Seaford's Dave Pollard (In Gear) was third (1hr.55min.49sec) followed by Jim Cheek (Lewes Wanderers, 1hr.57min.24sec) while fifthplaced Etoile rider Roger Smith clocked a time of 1hr.58min.57sec to complete the winning team.

Coyle, who afterwards got caught in the gridlock that plagued Sussex on Sunday, said: "The hardest thing I did all day was turning motorist afterwards. I went to watch the Giles Ree race but the roads nearby were jammed solid and it took several hours to drive the 18 miles home."

Jules Birks (Bianchi Cycles) won VC Etoile's Giles Ree Memorial road race at Staplefield.

The Frenchman was among a small group of riders who broke away from the 70-strong main field around the eightmile mark in the 73-mile event.

Birks revelled in the heatwave conditions and he outsprinted Steve Gowar (Pacific RT) by six lengths at the finish. Third man Peter Kench (Liphook Cycles) followed at 1min.55sec.

The best placed Sussex rider was Worthing's Chris McNamara (Ewhurst Controls) who finished eighth.

Junior rider Peter Mitchell (VC Jubilee, Shoreham), just 15, is so good he is allowed to compete against senior riders in some Sussex Track League events at Preston Park.

He won the seventh meeting of the series raced around eight laps.

Former league champion Mark Winton (Lewes Wanderers) won the ten-lap race and league leader Lee Povey (unattached) won a Keirin race.
