A warehouse worker is taking early retirement after winning more than £102,000 at bingo.

The 66-year-old from Southwick had planned to work for another year but has now decided to give up next month.

The man, who asked not to be named, won the National Bingo game prize of £100,000 plus a further regional prize of £2,062 when he played at the Mecca Club in Middle Street, Brighton.

He has been a bingo player for 40 years and has a daughter and two grandchildren.

His previous biggest win was £1,200 although he has won £1,000 several times as well as many smaller amounts.

There is a half-hour wait after the national game has been played before the results come through but the winner had to leave early on the night of his win because the friend he was with wasn't feeling well.

He said: "Everyone at the club thought I had won the jackpot and began cheering and clapping me when I first called house.

"But I took my friend home before I knew if I had won any more than the house prize of £36. I left my phone number in case, though I wouldn't let myself think about winning any more.

"When I got home the club manager had rung me and then I started to believe it. A phone call back confirmed it.

"The money will make a huge difference to me. After I finish work I think I will investigate the scenery around Britain which is something I have often thought about doing."
