People in Sussex are among the kindest in the UK when it comes to helping save people's lives.

More than a quarter of the population of Brighton and Hove have signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register (27.1 per cent) and the figure for Horsham is 27.4 per cent.

The two areas are in the top ten places in the UK in a list compiled by UK Transplant to raise awareness of the need for more donors.

The top town was Gateshead where 36 per cent of the population has signed up and Basingstoke came in second with 35.7 per cent.

Each year almost 3,000 people in the UK are given a new lease of life through an organ transplant.

But there are about 8,000 people needing a transplant to save or dramatically improve their lives so there is always an urgent need for more donors - particularly as about 400 people die each year waiting for a transplant.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the NHS Organ Donor Register and UK Transplant has launched a challenge to add one million more lifesavers to the register. You can join the organ donor register by contacting 0845 6060400 or www.uktransplant.org.uk
