I am writing in sympathy for the embarrassing slip Angela Pettett made (Letters, May 18). To write about the proposed Falmer stadium "it is clear nobody wants it there" was brave, to say the least.

It was unfortunate her letter appeared the same day as a front-page report about a petition, signed by 61,000 people, in favour of it.

Far from "nobody" wanting a stadium at Falmer, I would say this evidence, although by no means the full story, shows the majority of people do.

In fact, it appears the only people who don't are the residents of Falmer Village (obviously), Lewes District Council (don't ask) and the odd few who think they know better than the planning experts.

After reading some of the contributions to The Argus letters page over the past couple of weeks,

I would urge anyone who thinks the owners of Toads Hole Valley (THV) are making a generous offer not to take it at face value.

The letter from Robert Stiles (Letters, May 14) made the offer of land sound appealing but it only addressed the positive aspects.

The full facts of the offer, which were presented at the inquiry, paint a different picture.

Mr Stiles suggested a development at THV would simply be "cheaper".

The basis for this argument is dubious, to say the least.

Even Lewes District Council, which fiercely opposes the Falmer plan, did not agree with the scheme's costing.

Could it be an attempt to get a business development, which the council think is unnecessary, passed by the planners by piggy-backing on the Albion's hard-fought campaign for a stadium? Or am I just being cynical?

Read the evidence and draw your own conclusions.
