I am surprised and disappointed at the actions of Liberal Democrat MP for Lewes, Norman Baker, after Brighton Pavilion MP, David Lepper, tabled an early-day motion in the House of Commons urging MPs to show support for a stadium at Falmer (The Argus, May 26).

This motion urges Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to approve the stadium as soon as possible.

However, Norman Baker has emailed the 62-strong group of Lib Dem MPs, telling them not to put their names to the motion.

So far, no Lib Dem MPs have signed it, unlike the 20 Lib Dem MPs who signed a similar pro-stadium motion last year.

Of these, sixteen remained after the May 5 General Election.

Some supported the Falmer plans in the election campaign, three opposed the stadium and six expressed no opinion. One MP is considering signing the motion, others are steering clear because it is not popular enough. As it is not a three-line-whip issue, MPs can make up their own minds.

The latest public inquiry considering whether there is a better site for the stadium ended on May 5.

The planning inspector will complete his report by the end of July. Mr Prescott will then announce his decision by October, at the latest.

I thought the Liberal Democrats were supposed to be a progressive party but this does not appear to be the case with the stadium at Falmer.

This is the second time the Lib Dems have played a part in the destruction of local football.

David Bellotti, who Albion fans will remember, was Lib Dem MP for Eastbourne and Bill Archer's right-hand man when the Goldstone Ground was sold.

Local Liberal Democrats - your actions will be noted by fans and interested parties of this important issue for the club and the city.
