A boy of ten who survived a 100ft cliff fall near Beachy Head, has been presented with a replacement Liverpool FC shirt after his was cut to shreds.

James Black was spotted by two men on a rock at the cliff base because of his distinctive red Liverpool shirt.

However, paramedics had to cut it up as they treated him at the scene, leaving him without his beloved top.

Sussex Police heard about James's loss and contacted the club. Within days the Anfield club had sent him a replacement shirt, along with a goodie bag.

Chief Inspector Peter Mills, of Eastbourne police, gave them to James at a special presentation.

James, of Old Town, Eastbourne, said: "I was a little bit disappointed when they had to cut up my shirt because it was my favourite one.

"But when they gave me all this stuff I was amazed. It was really nice of them.

His mother, Penny, 35, said: "He's really pleased by it all."

James pledged never to go near a clifftop again after he escaped with only cuts and bruises following the plunge a fortnight ago.

James, a Year 5 pupil at Ocklynge Junior School, Eastbourne, told how he grabbed hold of grass as he felt the chalk cliff below him give way as he went exploring alone.

He plunged 100ft and landed on his back on a flat rock just west of Holywell, near the notorious 535ft-high cliffs at Beachy Head.

It prompted a large-scale rescue operation involving police, ambulance, the fire service and coastguards.

A police helicopter airlifted James to Eastbourne District General Hospital and he expects to be off school for the next two weeks.

In the meantime, he has been enjoying getting back to normal by playing his PlayStation as he celebrates his new football gear.

A force spokeswoman said: "It was a very kind gesture from the club."
