Eastbourne Borough moved to the brink of the Conference south play-offs as goals from Andy Atkin and Yemi Odubade earned them a vital win against Weston-super-Mare last night.

Garry Wilson's side now need just a point from their final game at home to relegation-threatened Carshalton tomorrow to ensure they finish in the top five.

The victory, which came hot on the heels of Tuesday night's hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bishop's Stortford, means only Dorchester can overtake Borough. To do so they would have to beat Bognor at Nyewood Lane and hope Borough lose.

Assistant manager Nick Greenwood said: "We would have been happy to take a point from the match to leave us needing a win tomorrow so to beat a side who have been playing well all season was a fantastic result.

"We are not there yet but we have given ourselves a great chance. Hopefully we have another big performance left in us for tomorrow."

Borough were having to play the second of three matches inside five days last night as the original game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch on Saturday.

Weston's Woodspring Park had still not recovered in time for the clash to go ahead so the match was switched to Basingstoke's ground.

In front of a sparse crowd made up predominantly of Borough supporters, Wilson's side spent much of the first half on the defensive but still managed to go in 2-0 up at half time.

In a busy opening period Weston missed two good chances before Atkin fired home a half volley on four minutes following good work by Odubade on the right.

Weston pushed forward in search of an equaliser but Borough soaked up the pressure and doubled their lead in the 35 minutes.

A long clearance out of defence was flicked on by Scott Ramsay and Odubade shot through a crowded goalmouth to notch his 12th goal in 13 games since joining from Yeovil.

In the second half Borough defended valiantly, looked the more composed side and controlled the game. Atkin and Stuart Tuck went close but Borough held on to take the points which sets them up nicely for the visit of Carshalton tomorrow.

Greenwood added: "It was an excellent performance considering we had already played a tough match two days before. We were as solid and well organised as we have been all season and thoroughly deserved to win.

"It should be an exciting game tomorrow as Carshalton need to win to stay up. Hopefully a big crowd will turn out to cheer us on."
