Dave Gellatly hit the winner as East Grinstead beat Eastbourne United 2-1 to move out of the bottom three in County League division one last night.

The Wasps now go into Saturday's final fixture at Sidlesham knowing another three points will ensure their survival.

Manager Bob Smith said: "It's been about six weeks since we were out of the relegation zone and our safety is still in our own hands.

"We are a top side and I think we showed that tonight.

"We hope Southwick will lose at Eastbourne Town but we mustn't look at other results, we must look at what we can do and if we win we will be okay."

After getting to grips with a United side adopting three at the back and a holding midfield player in Dave Read, Grinstead took the lead just after ten minutes when a cross-shot from Phil Thompson appeared to get a deflection.

The Wasps continued to buzz around the United goal with attacking fullback Adam Dart taking a few pot shots.

But United levelled four minutes before the interval when Grinstead goalkeeper Dave Tidy clattered into Mark Warren and Steve Prodger shot low into the corner from the penalty spot.

Gellatly, back after a 42-day ban, kept Grinstead's relegation fight alive when he rocketed home from the edge of the area seconds before the interval.

Top scorer Kris Trevor was among a number of culprits as Grinstead squandered a series of chances after the interval but they kept it tight to leave Smith smiling at the final whistle.
