Hopefully, Celia Barlow, the prospective Labour candidate for Hove will address herself to her own quote in the story about three gay candidates fighting Hove at the coming general election (The Argus, March 5).

She said: "What really should count are party policies, not the personal sexuality of candidates."

In a city with 35,000 lesbian and gay people, the Labour group does not have one gay councillor on Brighton and Hove City Council, never mind a national parliamentary candidate.

Either lesbian and gay people don't feel supported and valued enough to stand for Labour in Brighton or they are not actively encouraged to do so in winnable seats.

Maybe Celia, as the person who had the benefit of being chosen from an all-women short list, can identify the party policies that will result in the demographics of the city being reflected within the Labour Party in Brighton and Hove.

Then the 15,000 lesbian and gay people who live here will finally have the opportunity to support a truly inclusive party in an inclusive city.
