Albion manager Mark McGhee was today waiting to hear whether he faces another goalkeeping headache.

Ben Roberts was carried off just one minute into his comeback game for the Reserves yesterday.

Roberts, sidelined all season by a back problem, was today having a scan on a leg injured when team mate Adam Mountford fell heavily on top of him during a goalmouth scramble.

With Michel Kuipers already out for the season, the injury adds to Albion's goalkeeping problems.

McGhee said: "It is a big blow for Ben but it is just one of those unfortunate things that happens in football.

"Now we have just got to hope it won't keep him out for too long."

Roberts was given the all clear to play in yesterday's game at Northampton, which finished goalless, after responding well to a new course of treatment.

Reserve team boss Dean White said: "Ben's leg was straight when Adam fell on him and at first we thought he had broken his leg but fortunately it is just badly bruised.

"It is a nightmare for him and for us. It was something that could have happened at any time in the match but for it to happen after less than a minute of his first game back makes it even harder to take."

The injury could mean McGhee steps up attempts to bring in a keeper on loan, though he has ruled out a reunion with Portsmouth's out-of-favour Shaka Hislop, who he signed for Reading 13 years ago.

McGhee said: "I have a good relationship with Shaka but unfortunately he is way out of our depth."
