The sale and expansion of Shoreham Airport would be far more acceptable if modern environmental standards were applied.
Indeed, we should expect quieter and cleaner operations whatever happens. In an age when noise and exhaust emissions are strictly controlled in all other vehicles, how can it be right not to apply the same standards to aircraft?
Noise and fume limits should be imposed, with permanent monitoring at the airport perimeters.
An exception could be made for
an agreed number of airshow days but otherwise all aircraft using this facility should be expected to produce no more noise or fume emissions for neighbouring residents than are allowed for any other pollution sources, such as factories and road vehicles.
This is a commonsense approach to making the historic and useful airport environmentally acceptable in a residential area and it should be a precondition of any sale or partnership.
