What an excellent letter from Larry Berryman on the Newhaven incinerator form - clear, concise and to the point.

Everything, in fact, that the East Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove City Council form is not.

I call it democracy with a very small "d" when our so-called representatives use our money to bewilder voters in this way.

The form appears to have been worded to cause as much confusion as possible - presumably in the hope that would-be opponents of the incinerator will scratch their heads, stick it in the bin and head for the pub.

True, it asks people whether they are objecting or supporting the councils' decision. Fair enough.

But it goes on to ask voters to "provide the Modification reference or the Rejection reference to which your comments relate".

These references, they are told, "can be found in part 2 of 'Proposed Councils' Response".

There's more. Would-be objectors must then "state the paragraph (updated number) or policy number to which your comments relate".

I ask you! What gobbledegook!
