Burgess Hill failed to do themselves and the chasing pack a favour but they still gave leaders AFC Wimbledon enough to think about before going down 2-0 in Ryman division one.
Pat Gannon's excellent save from Wimbledon man of the match Rob Ursell was the biggest danger to Hillians in a first half of few chances.
But the visitors fell behind five minutes into the second half when Ursell finished well.
Steve Harper, Matt Geard and Darragh Ryan all went close for Burgess Hill before Chris Gell wrapped it up for Wimbledon three minutes from time.
Hastings United went down 3-1 away to Tooting and Mitcham.
Manager Neville Southall included new signing Scott Mulholland, who is being released by QPR, in midfield and left striker Chris Honey on the bench.
Tooting took the lead on 23 minutes when a quick counter-attack found David Moore who rifled home from outside the area.
With the first half drawing to a close Michael Brady was left unmarked at a corner to head past keeper Matt Brown.
An own goal by Jimmy Elford sealed United's fate, with Carl Rook's 75th-minute strike being no more than a consolation.
