In response to the article about encouraging cycling in Sussex (The Argus, February 14), the most obvious and helpful measure East Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove City Council could take to encourage cycling is to introduce a 20mph speed limit throughout urban areas and speed reduction in rural areas.
This is supported by a range of organisations, including Transport 2000, CTC, Living Streets, Friends of the Earth and CPRE.
This would benefit cyclists, pedestrians, older people, the disabled, children and other road users.
It would also reduce the annual road cull suffered by pets and wildlife.
East Sussex County Council could also help by opposing major road schemes (eg upgrading the A27).
Every car on a trunk road originates in a residential area. Brighton and Hove City Council could help by opposing developments which simply generate more car journeys, such as park-and-ride.
Supporters of this view should join Bricycles and Brighton and Hove CTC.
