I quite agree with Ken Fines that foundations for the King Alfred site should be of paramount concern (Letters, February 10).
However, in Brighton and Hove, we are lucky enough to have generally reasonable ground conditions with consistent good-grade chalk found at relatively shallow levels throughout the area.
While there will no doubt be technical challenges of all sorts, thankfully ground conditions should not be one of them on this site.
Although Ken Fines has, I am sure, a lot of town planning experience, we have been involved in foundation works on many of the seafront sites along the South Coast and would be happy to put his mind at rest regarding the suitability of this site on geotechnical grounds.
