(PG, 86 mins): Starring Jamie Kennedy, Alan Cumming, Bob Hoskins and Traylor Howard. Directed by Lawrence Guterman
Jim Carrey is nowhere to be seen in this hugely belated sequel to The Mask.
Instead, the story pivots around young animator Tim Avery (Jamie Kennedy), who is struggling with his beautiful wife (Traylor Howard) to come to terms with the new responsibilities of fatherhood.
When his baby son Alvey (Ryan Falconer) inadvertently slips on The Mask, which is possessed by the spirit of Loki, the Norse god of mischief (Alan Cumming), the toddler becomes an unstoppable force of nature.
Not as bad as it sounds (although expectations were never that high in the first place), this is likable but disposable cartoon comedy made flesh.
Kennedy as a low-rent Carrey stand-in fails to make much of an impact but Cumming puts in such an over-the-top showing that you can't fail to be entertained by his constant gurning.
