The system of giving schoolchildren work experience placements has come under attack for reinforcing gender divisions.

MPs were told that the onus was often on youngsters to find their own places in local firms, which favoured white, middle-class girls and boys.

No agenda was being set to widen opportunities for young people to experience "non-traditional" work, according to the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC).

In evidence to the Trade and Industry Select Committee, the EOC said the current system was reinforcing gender, class and race divisions.

It said: "Few children are given the chance to explore the impact of different choices on their future pay and progression. There is a lack of strong links between education and industry."
