In response to your front page article regarding council tax rises (The Argus, February 3), parts of it made me shout with incredulity.

Firstly, the Government spokesman claimed: "The whole point of the revaluation is to make the system fairer, not make more money".

What rubbish. Revaluation would not make the system any fairer but would increase council tax revenue.

Secondly, councillor Simon Burgess claimed: "Council tax levels are dependent on a range of local factors, not just property values".

This is also rubbish - evidenced by his lack of explanation as to what these "local factors" are.

Council tax has always been based on property values, the assumption being the more your house is worth, the more you earn, which is a fallacy.

Besides, no matter how much your house is worth, you won't see that money unless you sell the house so this is effectively a tax on money we don't have.
