I refer to the many recent objections printed in relation to the King Alfred and Caffyns Garage developments (Letters, February 7).

The voters of Brighton and Hove clearly do not want to see the population of the city increase in the way Brighton and Hove City Council is trying to force through. The council should be trying to resist the Government's drive to fill everywhere with flats - I'm sure it is the will of the people who voted them in.

With regard to the King Alfred, if the council wanted to knock down 600 houses and replace them with a 600-flat tall building surrounded by acres of grass and trees, I doubt many people would object.

Instead, the council wants to squeeze 600 flats on to a tiny piece of land at an unhealthily high density on top of the already-full city. I fail to see why the voters are not getting what they wanted.

Don't be under any illusions. This is not about providing affordable housing or anything like that (how can a Gehry building be cheap?) - it is about increasing the population of the city against the will of the voters.

If the Labour Council can't see this, they should pack their bags.
