Richard Midgley has been told he has the strength of character to come bouncing back to top form after a shoulder injury.

Midgley made a gentle comeback in the 91-66 mauling of Oregon State, scoring nine points.

He was more prominent in a 97-76 defeat at high-flying Arizona, top scoring for his team with 18 points.

The third-year guard from Burgess Hill is widely recognised as Cal's on-court leader and was badly missed during his three-game absence.

Speaking after the Arizona game, coach Ben Braun said: "When Richard came out, he was trying to make some big plays.

"He finally settled down and was able to do some things. He didn't hit his first couple of shots but he kept shooting.

"That's the mindset you have to have. You've got to take some shots and knock some down."

Midgley was six-of-13 from three-point range and added six rebounds but Cal were unable to silence a crowd of 14,591 in Tucson.

Andy Smith continues to find it tough to get serious court time for unstoppable Bentley at division two level.
